dc.description.translationabstract | Jijiu (the Hastily-Written) was an important enlightening book for the very young at the old time. Served first as a word-recognition book for pre-school pupils or young beginners, it was titled more than one. Some called it Jijiupian (the Hastily-Written Chapter); some called it Jijiuzhang (the Hastily-Written Volume);_x000D_ others, simply Jijiu (the-Hastily-Written). A job to clarify the titles of the book is thus seen by many as necessary._x000D_ When Shi-You first wrote the book, he did not write it in Zhangcaoshu (semi-cursive style or the writing script); instead, he wrote it in the popular Lishu (official script or clerical script). Therefore, it would have been impossible that the book was titled Jijiuzhang because it was written in Zhangcao._x000D_ According to studies, the term “Zhangcao” did not appear until Wei or Jin Dynasty. Even if this writing script was already commonly practiced among the civilian at the West-Han, it was called “Licao” (the clerical grass script), to be_x000D_ distinguished from the term “Jincao” (contemporary grass script). In a word,_x000D_ “Jijiuzhang” wouldn’t have been the correct term to use since when Shi-You wrote Jijiu, the term “Zhangcao” had not yet heard._x000D_ Examined again by ancient book category and classification, the two thousand word work Jijiu was too long to be called “zhang” (chapter) since several “zhangs” (a sixty-word piece) made a “pian” (volume). In summary, it should have been the term “pian” (volume) which was originally applied to Shi-You’s book Jijiu (the Hastily written) while the term “Jijiuzhang”(the hastily written chapter) was a term after the appearance of the term “zhangcao” (semi-cursive script).
