Anping Port became choked with silt during Japanese rule of Taiwan, and thus the Japanese engineer Torata Matsumoto launched a major construction project to build a new canal connecting the city to the harbor area, completed in 1926. This canal, however, became the scene of many stories about dying for love. In the 1930s there was a particularly famous case of a double suicide in the canal, perhaps due to the prevailing fashion for free love, and this inspired the writing of several poems in the form of Han Shih ( classic Chinese poetry ) and five koa-á-chheh ( Taiwanese Opera songbooks ). The story goes as follows. Chen Ching-kui was an adopted daughter who fell into a career as a geisha. Her lover Wu Kai-li, a customs officer, resorted to smuggling cargo to raise money to save her from the brothel. When his actions were exposed, the couple tied their hands together and jumped into the canal, drowning. Thirty years later a film based on this incident, Death for Love in Tainan Canal ( 1956 ), was produced by Ho Chi-ming, one of the first-generation of Taiwanese directors, with the character of Chen, as an adopted daughter, being used to examine the social issues related to this. This paper explores the radical force arising from the advocacy for free love in the 1930s with reference to these poems, koa-á-chheh, and Death for Love in Tainan Canal.
