Traditional serializability theory is not efficient enough to meet the needs of the advanced database applications, for example, supporting long transctions. Moreover, the new generation of database applications requires modeling techniques more powerful than the ones offered by relational database systems. Object-oriented databases provide a promising alternative for advanced applications such as computer-aided design and multimedia databases. In this paper, to increase the degree of concurrency control and improve the performance of advanced database applications, we propose a dination-based concurrency control protocol for object-oriented database systems. Basically, our proposed protocol is based on the granularity locking method in the ORION object-oriented database system and altruistic locking(which is proposed for supporting long transactions).
