dc.description.abstractThis paper presents an adaptive concentric clustering scheme to construct a routing topology which can reduce the transmission distance between nodes in a wireless sensor network for gathering sensory data from a base station. Depending on the current location of base station, the proposed algorithm can divide the set of network nodes into several concentric clusters and establish individual routing chain within each cluster such that the transmission distance between neighboring nodes on the chain is reduced. In addition, the proposed algorithm can automatically select appropriate cluster heads for the concentric clusters according to the number of sensor nodes remained so far in each cluster, which can also shorten the transmission distance between neighboring cluster heads. By computer simulation, the results show that the proposed algorithm performs better than other similar protocols in terms of energy save and lifetime increase capabilities for wireless sensor networks with random deployment of sensor nodes.
