dc.description.abstractOn account of the bandwidth limitation of the physical communication medium, the wireless environment is asymmetric communication environment which characteristic of asymmetric communication environment is the download stream capacity from servers to clients is much greater than the upstream capacity from clients back to servers. Traditional client-server protocol to delivery data from servers to clients is not suitable in wireless environment. A better way to delivery data is broadcast-based methods. However, broadcast-based methods usually cause long access time because retrieving broadcast data can be viewed as accessing data from the sequential access device. We proposed two compression algorithms to improve the long access time in this paper. Our proposed algorithms compress the broadcast data pages before they are broadcast, and compressed pages are uncompressed in mobile clients' (MCs') local memory. Due to the limited bandwidth in wireless environment, compression algorithms are suitable to apply in such environment.
