F has proposed some service models and mechanisms to meet the demand of QoS (Quality of Service), such as Integrated Services and Differentiated Services. In those architectures, QoS and resource reservation has been shown to work when applied in one direction, while availability of bandwidth at the reverse path is taken for granted. This condition may not be fulfilled in a real network. In this paper, we will investigate the effect of both, unidirectional and bi-directional reservation. Our performance analysis demonstrates that in more a realistic network environment, only bi-directional resource reservation can provide to the customers QoS guarantees. Several scenarios of aggregation of applications traffic flows are used to evaluate the performance, such as shot-lived WWW traffic and non-adaptive UDP traffic. Eventually, a bi-directional resource allocation scheme is described and evaluated.
